Twenty-five years ago I had a new wife in one state, and a job at the opposite end of another state!
After graduate school, in early 1992, 27 1/2 years ago, I accepted and began a journey as the facility Ergonomist at Alcoa’s Warrick Operations, one of the largest aluminum smelters in the world. To get an idea of the scope, it had about 140 acres under roof, I had an electric golf-cart style scooter to get around (it was painted a lovely shade of yellow,) and a map of the facility.
But after 2 1/2 years there, working with co-workers all over the facility, at our BU headquarters in Knoxville, and our sister facilities around the US, I found myself a newlywed, but with a geographic challenge.
I was in Southern Indiana, and Meaghan, my wife of only a few months, was in the middle of her graduate school program at Loyola University, Chicago. Fortunately in a relatively short time, I was able to accept a position at Zurich Services Corporation.
So 25-years ago (today, actually,) I began my Ergonomics consulting career at Zurich. I have worked, literally, around the world, literally. From mines 900-feet below the New Mexico desert, to processing platforms 13-stories above Baton Rouge, LA, and to top hotels in New York, NY. I have been from Tupelo to Tucson, to Topeka, to Tokyo. From Sydney to Seoul to Seattle. From Manchester to Manhattan to Madrid. Buffalo to Budapest to Bucharest. And a few more places.
But 2 1/2 years ago, everything changed overnight. My position was among many eliminated in massive, $1.5 BILLION global restructuring. What to do? Mine was the sole income. We had three kids by then, in middle school, high school, and college (we still do!)
Meaghan & I talked, prayed, and reached out to friends and family. Then we took the big plunge. I had always considered independent consulting as a post-retirement career, but retirement eluded me. I was way too young to retire, and had way too many obligations. That’s when we founded QP3 ErgoSystems LLC, and I began consulting independently.
One of the best parts about our company is that since I had worked with so many talented people, both as colleagues and clients for so many years, and since many of them had also “moved along,” our network was strong.
Thus, when business partners began asking whether QP3 ErgoSystems had someone with Property Experience, or Machine Guarding, Safety, Hazardous Materials Management, General Liability, Environmental Management, or Industrial Hygiene, I had a ready network of people I trusted to do a good job. Some I had not worked with for 10-15 years, but we “picked right up!”
And that’s where we are today. Ready to help clients in office environments, in manufacturing/processing, and in hospitality. We are a leader in risk consulting, and our teammates have decades of experience working with clients around the world.
