We often hear about “Risk Assessments,” but what are they, actually? Why are they important? And why should they be completed independently?
A Risk Assessment is a formal process that is used to identify hazards and risk factors that can have a negative impact on a business, operations, people and the environment. This can be a general look at the workplace and operations or very focused.
The hazards and risk factors could relate to the health and safety of employees, visitors, and guests. They could be in regard to the protection of life and property. Risks may also be present that affect a company’s reputation in the marketplace, the risk of being “shut down” by regulators, and risks that can adversely affect the environment.
The hazards and risks which are identified are then evaluated to understand the potential consequences, severity and likelihood, of these negative impacts. The evaluation can take several forms and are best completed by trained professionals who know about the various types of risk that can occur, formally called Safety, Ergonomics, General Liability, Property Protection, and Hazardous Materials and Environmental Management.
Once evaluated, the risks are ranked with a defined criteria, often numerical, which is then used to rank them in order of importance and/or severity.
